DOWNS, SHELTON, WELCH posted by Pat Dakin on Thursday, February 17, 2000

I am researching my great-grandfather John Thomas (Tom) SHELTON who lived in La. and Miss. He married second to Melissa DOWNS, they had a child Herman SHELTON who lived in or near Alexandria, La. Melissa died shortly after Herman's birth, while they were living in Miss. Herman lived with his grandparents DOWNS in LA, presumably near Alexandria. Apparently Melissa had a sister Ava who married a WELCH. Not sure of relationship to Ava but Herman had an Uncle Kelly, presumably a DOWNS. The mother of Ava is buried in the Pineville Cemetery--would like to get official name of cemetery. Ava WELCH may have lived in or near Franklin Parish, however her mother d. in or near Alexandria. Herman probably died sometime within the past 20 years near Alexandria; would like to get a copy of his obituary.

CALHOUN, KIMBALL posted by Lorie Thornhill on Saturday, February 19, 2000

I am searching for information on a family listed on the 1860 Rapides Parish census. The family is John CALHOUN, his wife Mary, daughters Louisiana and Louisa, and son Frank W. My great great grandmother was Louisiana CALHOUN. Her tombstone lists her birthdate as 1855 and born at Turnbull Island in Pointe Coupee Parish. Around 1870- 1871 she was taken by Benjamin KIMBALL as a housekeeper. By 1879 Benjamin, his family, and Lou were living in Franklin Parish on the Tensas River. I have been unable to find anything on her parents or siblings and am hoping someone may know if this Louisiana and my Louisiana CALHOUN are the same person. I was told that Lou and possibly her siblings may have been orphans when she was taken by Ben.
